History Of Khodiyar Mandir Trust

 Khodiyar Mandir, located near Bhavnagar in Gujarat, is one of the most revered temples dedicated to Khodiyar Mata, a powerful and widely worshipped deity among various communities in the region. The temple, situated beside Tataniya Wali Lake, is a popular pilgrimage site and attracts thousands of devotees every year, especially during festivals and religious occasions.

The temple was constructed in 1911 by the Maharaja of Bhavnagar, in gratitude to Khodiyar Mata for her divine blessings and protection of the royal family. The scenic location of the temple beside the lake adds to its spiritual ambiance, and it has become a significant place of devotion, especially for Rajputs, Leuva Patels, and many agrarian communities who consider Khodiyar Mata their kuldevi (family goddess).

Legend of Khodiyar Mata

According to legend, Khodiyar Mata was born to Mamadiya Gadhvi, a pious and devoted man who was childless for many years. After intense devotion to Lord Shiva, he was blessed with seven daughters and one son—Khodiyar being one of them. The family, though divinely blessed, faced jealousy and societal rejection due to their humble status.

The most famous part of the legend recounts that Khodiyar Mata and her siblings were gifted divine powers by the serpent deity Naga Devta. It is believed that she emerged from a lake riding a crocodile, which became her vahana (divine vehicle) and symbol of power. Even today, Khodiyar Mata is often depicted riding a crocodile, symbolizing fearlessness and protection.

Her powers were later recognized by kings and rulers, including the Bhavnagar royal family, who became ardent devotees. She is believed to have protected the kingdom from calamities, illnesses, and enemies. Over time, her following spread widely across Gujarat and even into parts of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh.

Architecture and Devotion

The temple itself features traditional Hindu architecture with intricate carvings and a serene atmosphere. Devotees often take a holy dip in the nearby lake before entering the temple. Offerings of coconut, flowers, and red chunri (veil) are common. The temple is especially vibrant during Khodiyar Jayanti, which marks the goddess's birthday and is celebrated with great devotion and large gatherings.
